Viscometers are designed to evaluate the thickness and flow of liquid based products. Viscometers, however, do not always provide results that are both differentiating and repeatable. Particulates in the sample, adhesion, variable solids content, separation and other inclusions can all drastically influence the results. Commonly used tests like Zahn cups often do not provide differentiating data that can discern subtle differences in formula or production methods. This application study presents a syringe testing method for evaluating the thickness and flow of liquid based materials using Stable Micro System’s TA.XTPlus Texture Analyzer and Exponent software. This method is relatively unaffected by small particulates or separation, uses a small amount of sample, is easily executed, requires minimal clean up, and provides differentiating and repeatable results.
